I'm a little confused by your post.

I'm not sure if this is where you are going wrong but not so long ago, I failed to make the distinction between the database and the oracle software.

If you have deinstalled/deleted the oracle binaries (all files in $ORACLE_HOME) then there is no way you can create a database.

You first have to reinstall the binaries.

I would then launch dbassist and delete any old databases that oracle 'thinks' are there. ...I believe the installer looks at the /etc/oratab file for references to databases. ...after that you can create a database.

Well, since I already went through the deinstall option and also deleted the $oracle_home, is there something else I can do? I'm trying to reinstall the db but i'm getting a prompt asking me if I want to upgrade or migrate the old db at /db/oracle/... (strange since i had deleted that folder). Can i just ignore this option and proceed w/ the install w/o the install going haywire? Can I still delete the old db w/ dbassist after the install?

Launch $ORACLE_HOME/bin/dbassist and delete any database you have created.

Then launch the installer from your oracle cd and select deinstall option to deinstall the software.

I'm just going to reinstall Oracle8i and start from scratch. Any docs out there on uninstalling Oracle8i? The only ones I have found are on Windows and they're all saying how Oracle does not completely uninstall. Is this true for Oracle on Solaris? I ran the uninstaller and removed everything but I noticed the oracle home was still there. I ended up deleting it. Is there anything else I need to do?
