Excellent thread on VLDB and backups. I know EMC BCVs/Timefinder works for quick disk backups from experience. However, EMC is not an option, we are a IBM shop w/ Shark storage, Raid-5. The IBM reps say flashcopy works the same if not better than EMC BCVs. Question, is this pure marketing slop or does flashcopy work as advertised?

I have seen many mentions and experience w/ EMC but have never seen flashcopy mentioned here. Thanks for any insight to flashcopy you can provide.

Speed of backup devices.
Speed of infrastructure from DB to the backup devices.

Given a best case, lots of backup devices to backup to in parallel, fast fast infrastructure and really fast (and expensive) equipment, you could backup 1TB in an hour or two... Realisticly, much much longer, perhaps upwards of 10-12+ hours at a moderate price range. You could stagger these
backups over the week, backup some tablespaces and all archived redo logs on
day one, other tablespaces and archived redo logs on day two and so on. This
staggered approach will reduce the overhead associated with a large, long
lasting backup.

Recovery of a TB will take a while of course, be prepared for that when negotiating your SLA's.

A product like BMC's timefinder makes a good primary backup/recovery solution.

This rman would be the secondary recovery solution.... (Timefinder is the

Anybody know time frames I might be able to restore/backup 500Gig to 1terabyte
of database from disk?

I will perform it before it goes live but I would like get a ball park idea of restore times before hand so we can determine if it can

in the SLA requirements.

Any parameters to focus on to improve performance other than allocating channels?
