Well, I've never gone under that covers and tried to determine what exactly is happening.

It's a shortcut for 'shutdown abort; startup'.

Useful for starting crashed instances, and bouncing recalcitrant instances that don't respond to 'shutdown immediate'.

The docs don't go into too much detail about 'shutdown abort' or 'startup force'. Maybe on MetaLink somewhere.

"startup force"?

What is your experience about it?

One time my colleague DBA used it on Production and result was 1)some table corruption
2) Not removing memory segment (ipcs -mb was showing 2 segments of same SGA
as original was not removed).
3)Utlimate solution was to reboot the box and reloading of table for corrupted rows...
