The database containing RMAN repository does not need to be up 100%, only when the backup is going on restoring. Therefore, in many sites, DBAs can actually shutdown the database and take cold backup, just for convenience sake, if not anything else. Jared wanted to know if anybody used hot backup for the RMAN repository.
