Wrong...I _think_ :)

If he rebuilds them using the correct file placements then it will work. The only problem is that he will have to open RESETLOGS and incomplete recovery will be impossible. But if he has all of his datafiles and is only missing control files then he can startup nomount and create controlfile from there.
