Igor - Hopefully you won't lose your repository at the same time you lose all your production database controlfiles. However, if that is happens, hopefully you were outside the computer room at that moment. ;-)

    So, you should be able to recover your repository and/or take a fresh backup.

    I should point out that even if you use an RMAN repository, the recovery information is still stored in the control files, so you can still perform a control file recovery. But Jared is correct that it is much more difficult if you must try to recover the control file from the RMAN backup piece. That is why I separately back up the control file (binary backup) after the RMAN backup. I understand this is all much better in 9i.
