I've been told the same thing, but the reasoning was that they couldn't guarantee what was put out for download was actually the correct build. Not sure that's very reassuring, either.

Oracle Corp. finds the checksum concept to be alien. They actually posted these words to me in a tar at metalink, "We don't support servers that are installed via download from otn." I guess "network computing" really is dead. ;)
