Character set are defined the database level. If you have two different databases, then you can have any two different character sets you wish. This is generally defined at the time you run the "create database..." statement.

Understand of course that in your scenario there would be limits on sharing data between the two databases. The UTF8 database could handle anything stored in the USASCII database because it is a superset, but you could not necessarily share data the other direction.

be US7ASCII)? How do you create the databases with two different character
sets (is it an init parameter)? If that is not possible and Oracle binaries were installed with US7ASCII, how can you convert it to UTF8 without having to reinstall everything? This is Oracle 8.1.7.3 on Solaris.
