When a vendor says it isn't certified for a version, then it's best that you follow what the vendor says. I've seen a number of apps break when the database was upgraded. Sometimes just changing a single driver will break things. For example, we have an app here (HEAT trouble ticket tracking) that requires the client to use the 8.1.7.3 ODBC driver and only that driver. Granted, the example deals with the client side of things, but it shows how touchy some vendor's apps are.

Running multiple versions of Oracle on a Unix box is not a problem.
