What platform are you on?
If UNIX, make sure your i/o settings for reads and writes (asynch or synch) are set to the same value and they agree with the system configuration. There was a known bug in 7.3 that corrupted archive logs that was supposedly fixed in 7.3.4. Do a search on metalink for 'alter system switch logfile'.
