Browsing through my Sed and Awk book following up on Mark's lead, I came up with this:

ps -ef|grep pmon|grep -v grep|awk '{ print $NF }'|awk -F_ '{ print $3 }'

TLDEV
TLQA
TLQAVAR
DBMON
RMAN
PRDINF
TLDVVAR That'll do fine !

Thanks again.
Ross
