Leslie,

In addition to oradim.log and alert.log (as mentioned by others) check the event log for anything.

Also, was this machine upgraded to W2K from NT4? If so, I remember a bug with autostart under this case - can't remember more details but check Metalink.

ORA_SID_AUTOSTART is already set to true in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORACLE\... Any other suggestion?
