Rick,
Having been down a similar road very recently, actually still going down the road. Oracle will not support NFS mounted drives if 1) they are on a unauthorized/certified filer (read that as NetAppliance or EMC), and 2) the nfs mount is not across a private network. Basically this means that any network share that your communicating with over your general purpose lan connection is forbidden territory. You can expect the rdbms to offline your data files at random points in time, just because it lost immediate contact with the file.
Now if your using a NetAppliance and/or EMC filer and you have a private vlan between the filer and a separate network card on your server then your supported.

Hi All,
Server A, Win 2000, Oracle 8.1.7
Server B, Win 2000 with Auspex storage appliance
We want to test all datafiles to be on Server B. How does Oracle on server A know about datafiles on server B. It is my understanding that Oracle does not recognize map drives. There must be another way that Oracle recognizes drives on Server B. Can anyone shed any light?
