only if you are using logical standby, which applies sql statements to the standby database instead of physical standby which applies archived redo logs

There is an entire manual dedicated to standby database (now called Data Guard) in the 9i doc set online. There is, as was pointed out elsewhere this morning, a section in each manual that talks of the differences between 8i and 9i versions.

It's fascinating reading and I'd recommend doing just that.
