On HP/UX, you can customize /etc/rc.config.d/oracle to include a symbol setting for "ORACLE_START". Like using "ORACLE_STOP", this symbol could be used to tell the startup script whether or not to autostart the DBs. Of course, the /sbin/init.d/oracle would have to be customized to actually make use of this new variable, but it's an easy clone of the ORACLE_STOP logic.

I just have ORACLE_START set to "0" for now. In my particular case, I'm in the same group as the SAs (actually, it's in my title, too), so if our server goes down, I need to know, too.

Thanks all for the input, especially John Weatherman's about an unstable system bouncing up and down. We had a similar situation when a memory bank blew chunks. Probably a good thing the DB didn't come back up.
