Kevin,
How would you bypass autostart?
I've never setup or documented methods to bypass startup of an Oracle database on NT or Unix.
On the other side of the coin, I've had difficulty shutting down Unix
systems
that used the default Oracle shutdown scripts.
They need modified to work correctly. 'shutdown normal' doesn't work too
well in many cases, and if your machine is in single user mode, and
there's
a connection to the database, there's only one thing to do...

I've always set up autostart. I don't like keeping the same hours as some of the system administrators I've worked with. Make sure the sys ad understands the procedure for bypassing the autostart when they need to. Keep your pager or cell phone turned on.

If you take RAC out of Oracle you get OLE! What can this mean?

Just an informal survey:
Would *you* automatically start a production Oracle instance on a boot of
a
Unix box?
Why or why not? Something version/OS specific (or maybe some crazy OPS reason)?
The only reason I can come up with for "no" is that I'm thinking an
autostart on boot could interfere with a recovery scenario, although I'm
at
a loss to come up with a specific case, thus the question.
Geez, only 34 and my memory is fading...
