Yep, works ok. Best thing to do is check the compatibility matrix on Metalink (73431.1).
So long as you have a valid combination of target, catalog db and catalog schema then everything should be fine.
I think there are (were?) issues in restoring an 8.0.5 database using an 8.1 catalog schema, though backups work ok. Thats why we have the the RMAN80 schema (taken from 8.0.6 I think).

Adrian,
have you done any recovery/restore operations?
I remember that the backups worked fine when things were mismatched, but a restore did not work at all. This was back a few years so maybe things are more stable now.

You can get away with the catalog database being a lower version than your target databases. We run 8.0, 8.1 and 9i target databases but have an 8.1.7 catalog, inside the catalog we have RMAN80, RMAN81 and RMAN901 schemas. All works fine.

The RMAN executables and scripts have to reside in a server running
Oracle8.x and above (i.e. the "target" database server), but the
database
housing the recovery catalog database is just a database that holds
tables,

RMAN
doesn't run on Oracle7, but it doesn't need to. EBU is completely out
