Do you have a ".tnsnames.ora" or ".sqlnet.ora" in /usr/users/oracle?

A colleague of mine has encountered something strange. When the HOME environement variable is set to the oracle users home (/usr/users/oracle) we can't connect to any oracle databases. When it is set to anything else (or to nothing) everything works fine. What is wrong with that directory to cause this?

Also, this is only happening on one host and not on others.

We are on Compaq Tru64 5.1 unix and a variety of 8i databases.

Any clues?
