As Steve and Dick point out, the preparation will make or break replication. An excellent resource for approaching replication is "Data Replication" by Marie Buretta, Wiley 1997. She provides a several "workplans" that help your organization prepare for replication. There is a workplan to make sure your infrastructure is prepared for replication. A workplan to make sure the application is prepared for replication. A workplan to make sure the data schema is prepared for replication. Many items are overkill except for a bet-your-company replication project at a Fortune 500, but my principle is that it is always easier to strike action items that don't apply to your project than to try to think up the action items that aren't on the list. In the worst case, presenting your management with the actions that should be performed before plunging into replication may dampen enthusiasm. Wait, DBAs are always good at that.

Greetings all,

To this point in time, our organization has pretty much had vanilla Client/Server and Web Apps accessing Oracle RDBMS on Tru64 Unix, Netware, and Windows/NT. However, we are considering future applications which may involve doing "Distributed Database" and "Advanced Replication". In just a high-level sense, what are the implications to the DBA staff? I.E. Would it be not much impact and "no big deal", or would it complicate our DBA's lives drastically and by "orders of magnitude"?

Thanks very much for your always valuable insights,

JDamiano
