Mike - I think you nailed it. The competition between Oracle and SQL Server produced a number of "newby-friendly" improvements. Myself, I believe if it is intimidating it raises the value of my expertise.

I think that Oracle saw the SQL Server installer and decided that they needed more animated gifs and a better looking interface. I still can't understand what is the problem with providing a character installer. Surely the installer is just core functionality with I/O calls. Oracle would make a lot of friends with a character installer and I refuse to believe that it's difficult to implement. They must already have the majority of the code from the 8.0.x installer.

Maybe I'm oversimplifying this or maybe Oracle have shares in RAM manufacturers (and Hummingbird).

Mike

Me thinks this was done to check off some boxes to indicate that Oracle is "easy" to install and maintain (OEM). These are boxes that SQL Server had checked off (I guess) for a long time, and Oracle didn't. And Oracle can check the Java box a few dozen times now. "Oracle is now easier for your (in)experienced IT shop to setup and maintain.", Oracle sales guy rants and raves. "And you don't need to pay for those over-priced experienced DBAs anymore!!!", he exclaims. CIOs eyes glaze over...

I am getting tired of W2K, and yearn to get back to Solaris....or any *NIX. Sigh.
