Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner and save you some time.

Also, note a couple of bugs I ran into w/spfiles. 1). If you change a parameter that can only take affect after a database bounce, then you must exit your session after shutting down the database before you can restart. Otherwise your session will core fault.
2). If you seed you SPFILE with an init.ora file containing UPPER CASE, you will be unable to change any parameter specified in upper case (although it doesn't complain). Appears that although it converts upper case to lower for lookup, it cannot do a match for updates. When you dump the SPFILE you will see dup entries, one in upper, the other in lower.
