There's the venerable and seminal 'Introduction to Database Systems' by C.J. Date

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0201385902/qid=1026257012/sr=2-1/ref=sr_2_1/102-9448226-0827333

For pure modeling, Dave Hay's "Data Model Patterns: Conventions of Thought"
is hard to beat, one of my favorites.

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0932633293/qid=1026256899/sr=2-3/ref=sr_2_3/102-9448226-0827333

Another of my favorites is "A Practical Guide to Logical Data Modeling" by

George Tillman. This must be the most quotable technical book I have ever read. Favorite quote (paraphrased): "There is a need for data modelers
because developers are so bad at designing files and databases."

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0070646155/qid=1026256717/sr=1-7/ref=sr_1_7/102-9448226-0827333

nuff said.

Richard Barker's "Case*Method: Entity Relationship Modellin" is on many a DBA shelf, mostly
because Oracle used to include it with their modeling class. Maybe they still do.
A good book, nonetheless.
