There's the venerable and seminal 'Introduction to Database Systems'
by C.J. Date
For pure modeling, Dave Hay's "Data Model Patterns: Conventions of
Thought"
is hard to beat, one of my favorites.
Another of my favorites is "A Practical Guide to Logical Data Modeling" by
George Tillman. This must be the most quotable technical book I have
ever read. Favorite quote (paraphrased): "There is a need for data
modelers
because developers are so bad at designing files and databases."
nuff said.
Richard Barker's "Case*Method: Entity Relationship Modellin" is on many a
DBA shelf, mostly
because Oracle used to include it with their modeling class. Maybe they
still do.
A good book, nonetheless.
