The point is exactly, that you DON'T have to update control file manually. "alter database rename file" does it for you. Just try to issue the command, and then backup control file to trace - you should be able to see the change. What you have to do manually, is to move the file.

Hi list,
What is the point to use "alter database rename file" command to move datafile? as we will need to update controle file anyway. So why not do the following directly to move datafile:

alter database backup contrlfile to trace and modify the location of datafile.
startup nomount and run the script inorder to update the controlfile. It works fine...

So what is the point of "alter database rename file" command?
