Also, please re-check permissions for 'oracle' binary in $ORACLE_HOME/bin (those should be -rwsr-s--x)

No, actually I'm smarter than most Unix people that's why I posted this thread on an Oracle email list.

The permissions are 775 for the sqlplus binary.

I own the whole ORA_HOME directory and everything under it.

I am part of the osdba and osoper groups.
