Hi

just to give an answer to myself ;):

At least the problem with the crashing installer is fixed. Eventhough I still don't know what SuSE version I'm on, I pulled a "Dirk-the-daring" and updated my glibc and timzone from 2.2.2-38 to 2.2.2-53. According to all information I found, it doesn't change anything, but adds some missing functionality needed by SUN's jdk 1.3.1. Well, now I just have to see, wether both 8.1.7 and 9.2 work together or I'll might end up being "Dirk-the-idiot".

Thanks for the hints,
Stefan

Hi Rachel

Yes. 9i brings along a 1.3.1, puts it into /tmp/OraInst..your-date-and-so-on
and runs the actual java installer stuff from there. What I'm getting really confused about is that I don't even know exactly on
which version of Linux on running. Ok, it's SuSE, but the Admin went home
and it could be 7.2 or .3 or Enterprise, who knows ;). The kernel works, it's 2.4.4, gcc is also ok, 2.95.3, but glibc is 2.2.2-38,
whereas SuSE recommends to patch the glibc (BUT ONLY on 7.2) to 2.2.2-53.
Great, does anybody know how to get a hold of the SuSE version on the system
?
I'm hesitating to install the patch, since I don't know which impact that
might have on the already installed 8.1.7. I guess if this one goes down the
drain they would be really thankful.

Any more ideas, especially how to find out about the running SuSE verion ?

Regards,
Stefan

I'm reading the installation guide for Unix based systems as I'll be doing a Linux install soon... and it specifically says Oracle will install 1.3.1 on Linux and Solaris -- Page 3-11
