AW: Installing 8.17 and 9.2 on one machine

Hi Mike

Actually, I do run into problems :(.
I installed 9.2 absolutely smoothly on another machine with only 9.2 on it last week.
This was on SuSE 7.3 with an IBM JDK 1.3.1 installed. Installer didn't cause any probs.

Now I found out that with the other machine (the one with 8.1.7 on it), I'm actually running
on SuSE Enterprise 7.1. Kernel is 2.4.4, glibc is 2.2 and gcc is 2.95.3. BUT, there is only a 1.1.8 (Blackdown, IBM ?!?) JDK installed. My Installer crashes silently after I selected the stuff to install. Doesn't 9.2 NEED JDK 1.3.1 to run the Installer (and the other tools) ? I'm not quite sure anymore.

Regards,
Stefan

No horror stories here Stefan. I'm currently running 8.1.7.1 (soon to be 8.1.7.4) and 9.2 on a laptop running Suse 8.0 professional. I'm using the 9.2 listener for everything.

I'd have to check what my java config is. I'm not aware of setting any specific CLASSPATH. I'll find out later if you need to know. Different ORACLE_HOMEs is (as you say) essential and setting up TNS_ADMIN in /var/opt/oraclr (or /etc/oracle) is sensible too. That's what I did.

I may have been lucky but I had the absolute minimum of hassle with this.

If you get any problems though, get in touch and I'll see if I can help.

Hi everybody

I'm looking for the pitfalls in a mixed 8.1.7 / 9.2 environment. We're running 8.1.7 for development on Linux (SuSE 7.3). Now I want to install 9.2 on the same machine. I was thinking of getting rid of the 8.1.7 listener and having the 9.2 one serving both the 9.2 and the 8.1.7 instances. Or can I just use the 8.1.7 listener for 9.2 (is there even a change in the listener software ??).

How about the environment for the Oracle user ? E.g. the Java classpath points to the 8.1.7 stuff. Can I just redirect it to the 9.2 JRE without scr/%§ing up my 8.1.7 configuration ?

I'll go with different ORACLE_HOMES anyway, but I assume it makes sense to direct TNS_ADMIN somewhere else like /var/opt/oracle !? How about the oratab ?

Am I missing anything else ? Any input or horror story about "how-to-not-do-it"
will be greatly appreciated.

TIA,
Stefan
