On Solaris at least you can do this: create processor sets which allow you to bind a group of processes to a set of processors that other processes don't use. man psrset for details. Be aware though that this is pretty radical tuning and it's easy on a heavily loaded system to starve other processes for cpu using this method. Buyer beware, etc. etc.
