If you are not backing up the redo logs also youcan do a simple Alter database Open Restelogs before Opening the database. So that the redo logs are created. If you copy the Online Redo Logs This Step can be avaoided.

I disagree. Always backup the online redo logs when doing a cold backup. Rama Valpuri's book Oracle Backup and Recovery chapter 3 on physical backups says "...use the os backup utility to copy all the onine redo log files, databases files and control files."

Ferenc Mantfeld,

For cold backup, oracle does not recommend backup the online redo log. And if you restore the whole cold backup, why need the online redo log? I am sure people doing cold backup will do shutdown normal/immediate, not shutdown abort. So there is no need to backup the online redo log at all! Backup the online redo log also take the risk of damage the current online redo log when you want to do full recovery.

So, never backup the online redo log when doing cold backup.
