For a newbie, I can possbily see how daunting the manuals might be so I will suggest the following:

Purchase Oracle8i DBA bible. Its vary task oriented and has one full chapter on EXPORT and one full chapter on IMPORT along with all parameters listed and explained as well as some other useful item like how to use param files.
