Although I lived in Amsterdam while ago (3 years between 1984-1987) and last

travelled in 1998 I still can reply couple of questions....

To have a car in Amsterdam seems to be a nightmare.

Keeping a car there is luxury and not requirement as it has excellent public

transport system specially if you are working in Central Amsterdam, it is faster, affordable and no worries of parking, narrow roads or traffic congestion as they have different path/road to drive with first priority.....so if you use your car you will face all type of troubles as mentioned....

Rent:
You have to get rental properties outside Amsterdam costing around Dutch Guilder 2000-3000/month as within Amsterdam properties are owned by Govt.and

if you are able to get it , it is really cheap and may be under DFL 1000.

Cost of living is high comparing US and some European Cities like London.( I lived there also between 1995-1998)

Net salary around DFL 7-8000 / month should be ok if it is possible.

Other Dutch cities like Rotterdam are comparatively cheaper.

Tax:(if not changed)
They were allowing 35% tax concession for first 5 year income to incoming Foreigners and remaining 65% were taxed as per local laws. Here you must ask

your prospective employer to give you specific figures for tax/social security(very high) deductions so that you could assess monetary situation.

Life

Living in area of Buitenveldert(where I lived)/Amstelveen is really nice and

no problem of transportation. Dutch people are really good, life is good. If

you have school going children, then language of education will be Dutch. If

you want English education, then Bristish /American schools are your choice but really expensive.

Food:

They have good super market chains (ALBERTHYN is very good and my favourite)

reasonably priced.

I still have good memories of Holland and treat is as one of my home..

If any specific question, you may sent email directly...

Here I shall tender my apology to Jared for writing on an off-topic subject thinking it might help others also....

Regards
Rafiq

Hi,

Agree with Stefan about pushy people.
To have a car in Amsterdam seems to be a nightmare. Traffic is terrible. Roads are narrow. A lot of multi-level parkings for... bicycles :-)
