If you are really getting into using SQL*plus as a script generator, have a look at my web site, in which just these problems are addressed. You can also download the paper I gave at Open World, Berlin, last year on this subject.

Oracle doesn't place anything. SQL*Plus does. If you generate scripts from SQL*Plus:
set linesize ...

Guys,

Building scripts from SQL generating SQL in Oracle on Unix. I know that there are set commands so that Oracle does not put CR or LF in the middle of a long command. Does anyone know these off the top of their head?
