Really, it's just the "utlestat.sql" part -- the BSTAT/ESTAT scripts contain formatting commands for SVRMGRL, not SQL*Plus. Formatting really only matters with "utlestat.sql" when it is generating the "report.txt" file...

It's perfectly OK to run SQL*Plus for "utlbstat.sql" and you can modify "utlestat.sql" to utilize SQL*Plus formatting commands in place of the SVRMGRL ones, but why bother? I only use BSTAT/ESTAT these days to send to the YAPP analyzer at www.oraperf.com anyways... :-)
