Another way to do is to write a PL/SQL code to do the copy.

Not 100% sure, but doesn't the SQL*Plus COPY command allow you to copy tables with LONGs...

THere is the TO_LOB function in 8.1.6+ ( I think), and from 9 you can issue the conversion directly with 'alter table'
