As does every organization we've got good and bad ones. My immediate boss is great, both as a techie and as a manager. In his early days working with SPIRES, Stanford Public Information Retrieval System, nee Stanford Physics ..., he built a three tier system. That may not seem like much, but it is instrumental to the web. Every so often someone claims to have developed the technique, files for a patent, and claims royalties from all makers of web products. It is my boss's work that is the "prior art" which shutdowns these claims.

He has been fantastic accommodating my erratic schedule so I can get my daughter to therapy.

I am an avid Dilbert reader and a great fan of both Scott and Douglas Adams (question of life, universe and everything, remember?) but I do not necessarily agree with management bashing. My boss happens to be a very nice guy and he was a consultant for Oracle Corp. He can be reasoned with, he's not always right and he understands that if I am to read books in the evening, he has to tolerate my extended beauty sleep from time to time. Not that it helps with the aesthetic side but I feel much better. He's a sort of male Rachel, I believe.
