RE: I need to change the instance name

Its actually the easiest part. However, I don't want to miss a step so you best running off to Metalink. They actually have a note out there on how to do it. Not quite up to date for 9i but close.

You need to shutdown your database, change your oracle sid, rename your init, if using an i version change the instance name and if desired the service
name. Hum, me thinks that's it. I may be missing something though. I feel like I am missing something.....

However, the moral of the story is that its quite easy and I have done it a couple of times. You need to make a decision on what to do with your directories structures if you are using the $ORACLE_BASE/admin/<sid>
structure. There is no technical reason to change it except for your own sanity.
