I don't think anyone who reads the original YAPP paper will miss this. If I recall correctly, one of it's opening statements is the classic formula:

    response time = service time plus wait time.

My own mantra puts in rather less scientific terms:

    If you have a performance problem, either your database     is working too hard, or it's not being allowed to work.
