John - I suggest that you go to http://www.google.com and search for ORA-04091 or Oracle Mutating Tables. There are some excellent documents on the Web that explain this clearly.

Is it possible for a update trigger to do a select on the table that the trigger is updating?

I would like to do a select on the table in a before update trigger on the table but am getting error ORA-04091
