anyone who COUNTS on a royalty check to pay basic bills is living in a dream world. It's like the ads I hear for the Sunday NY Times Job Market section -- this guy starts looking at penthouse apartments, because he's read the Job Market section and KNOWS he'll have a high-paying job in a matter of days.

No matter how many books you have written, you should never believe that that money will always be there and consistent. Royalties vary from quarter to quarter.

Heck, I don't even count on a pension (which I do have from a former company) or Social Security when I plan on retirement funds.
