SQL*Loader-282: Unable to locate character set handle for charact

I am trying to load data from a 8.1.7 SQL Loader session to a 7.3.4 database.
I am getting a SQL*Loader-282: Unable to locate character set handle for character set ID (0).
error message. Can anyone tell me how to get around this?
