Another reason for NOT using UDF (I have heard here, and I absolutely do not agree) is " ... well that means you must have a network trip to database and come back ..." What the person didn't realize that to avoid *this* network trip, he coded implicit SQL in 10 different places in a single form. And I almost asked them, "please tell me that your form is so optimized that a single extra call to DB will ruin the speed of the process" but I know when to keep my mouth shut ...

Once day, I'll be able to convince them ... until then I am going to try ....

You mentioned fancy coding for the sake of it. I guess lots of us would like to take advantage of the latest and greatest features just to feel like we are staying on top of things. But you are so on target -- don't just use certain features because they are there. Use what is best for the situation at hand.
