Additionally, if you are running Oracle Archiving, you need to make sure that you allow sufficient time for the copy to be made. Also, if the archive directory is full, the database will hang.

Well, I'd say about 3 log switches during 15 minute period before and after the freeze, nothing crazy ... that's what is confusing ...
