Service Names

We are attempting to install SQLNet in a failover configuration. The environment consists of two AIX servers with version 4.3.3 OS, Oracle 8.1.7.2 on both servers. These servers are on a DMZ without DNS. They communicate with each other by tcpip addresses only. We have set up tnsnames to communicate between each server when we use the instance name.

We have not been able to establish a connection when we use a service name.

I have read the Net8 Administrator's Guide until my eyes are glazed over. Oracle support has been on this for two days. Nothing seems to allow us to use service names. Any ideas? Anything unique to AIX that is an undocumented 'feature'?

Thanks in advance.
