For our OLTP systems, we standardize on all data files to be 2GB (basically for each data file we have additional two backup locations as well). Then we use whatever amount we need and keep remaining so that data file can be extended up to 2GB when required.

It has been working well for us, and it is consistent for prod/dev/acpt/blah/blah etc.
