This message is to inform you that you have been "bounced" by the ListGuru mailing list software in operation at fatcity.com (Fat City Network Services).

Being "bounced" is nothing personal -- please don't take it that way! In most cases, this comes about as the result of temporary mail delivery problems while attempting to reach your address. Possible reasons for this bounce include:

No matter how you got here, your job now is to resolve any problems that might exist and get re-subscribed to the mailing lists you were bounced from. This is not that difficult, and the ListMaster at this site will help you with any problems or questions you might have.

Start by checking with your System Administrator to determine if your site was inaccessible or down for any period of time recently. If it WAS, you may have simply gotten caught during that down time, and can re-join at any time (see below for how to get off this list).

If your site was NOT down, ask if they know whether any up-stream sites were down or inaccessible. Many up-stream providers can be the cause of delivery problems, even though your site was up the entire time.

If no sites were down, it might be possible (although infrequent) that your site name has changed. Again, check with your System Administrator for this, and for any possible change in your E-mail address.

Run-amok vacation programs and auto-responders which are stuck in a loop are easy to identify, because your mailbox probably has a large number of duplicate messages in them. You might also find some 'hate mail' from users which had to read through all the looping messages your system sent... :-)

If this was your reason for being bounced, PLEASE remember in the future that you should issue a SET <listname> NOMAIL command before you leave for vacation or start your auto-responder. Most modern auto-responders will NOT get caught in loops, but there are still a number of older auto-responders which do not understand mailing lists and will loop indefinitely. This is why it is very important that you issue the NOMAIL command before you leave!

One note about this condition: if you are clearly the result of a vacation program or auto-responder run-amok, you may not actually be bounced. The list owner or moderator may have modified your subscription to issue a NOMAIL command on your behalf. You may check the status of your subscriptions by issuing a WHICH command. If you end up subscribed to your old lists, you are probably just NOMAIL'd, and you can issue a SET <listname> MAIL command for each list, to resume mail service. If you find that you are ONLY a subscriber to the BOUNCED-L list, then you were removed from the old lists and must re-subscribe to each one (see below for instructions).

Finally, if none of the above problems apply to you, you may have been bounced as the result of excessive delivery failure messages which were returned to ListGuru. The exact nature of these failures may not be readily known. The algorithm for bouncing is complex, but basically the more failure messages which are received in a given period of time, the more likely you are to be bounced. If only one or two failures were recorded, you would likely NOT be bounced for such an error.

Either way, you should contact the ListMaster at our site to try and resolve your specific problem (see below for the address).

Once you have resolved your problems, you may simply re-subscribe to the lists you were previously subscribed to. Unfortunately, at this time, there is no available record of those lists (in case you lost track), but the ListMaster can determine your previous subscriptions, if needed.

As with *ALL* ListGuru commands, please make SURE you send your command to the address below, and NOT to the actual mailing list. If you are ever in doubt as to the format of any command, or how to use ListGuru, you can use the HELP command to obtain detailed instructions.

Send all ListGuru commands in an E-mail message to:

 ListGuru_at_fatcity.com

Commands must be placed in the message BODY (not the Subject: line) and must be one command per line. More than one command can be sent in a message. To subscribe to a mailing list, issue this command:

 SUBSCRIBE <listname> <your real name>

Where <listname> is the name of the mailing list you want to join, and <your real name> is your given name, NOT your E-mail address. To unsubscribe from this list, issue this command:

UNSUBSCRIBE BOUNCED-L   After you have re-subscribed to the desired lists, simply issue an unsubscribe command for this list. Actually, you can unsubscribe from this list at any time and for any reason. Once you have been added to this list, you will remain a subscriber indefinitely, and will continue to receive this posting periodically, as a reminder.

Should you have any questions or concerns, contact:

 ListMaster_at_fatcity.com

Please be specific about WHEN you were bounced, what you believe the problem is, etc. We will try and respond to you as quickly as possible.

Thank you!
