Ross,
IMHO Depends on Your IO subsystem. I am on HP 11.0 and XP 256 and ORACLE 816 (ALL 64 BIT) and ORACLE gets data in 1M chunk of data in one IO call while all the others being the same except storage being AUTORAID we are getting 256 MB chunks.
Steve Admas has a script and some goodies on this and you could set your value as per your results. Check teh following link
