in the registry set
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/ORACLE/HOMExx/ORA_sid_AUTOSTART to 'FALSE' (HOMExx is the entry for the ORACLE_HOME the instance uses, sid is the instance SID)
