David,

My understanding is that VCS itself can provide you with simple 'external' scripts that can be run to monitor the process as well as to perform any additional checks/stats gathering. Since this is ruin by VCS, it will be able to understand that there has been a failover. Apologies - I don't remember the details, but you should be able to check this with Veritas.
