Recover Primary DB from Standby DB

Am I an Idiot?

I've maintained a Managed Standby database (8.1.6 under Win2k) for a year now. We've now moved to new servers (8.1.7.2.5 under Win2k) and will again have both Primary (Production) and Managed Standby databases.

In planning a new backup stragegy, it occurs to me (why not ever before?) that I should be able to use the datafiles of my Standby DB (along with the Primary's archived and online redo logs) to recover my Primary DB in the event of media failure.

In the event of a drive failure on the Primary server, shouldn't I be able to shutdown the Standby DB and copy it's relevant datafiles to the Primary, then use the Primary's archived and online redo logs to recover those datafiles to the point of drive failure?

It makes sense to me, but nowhere in the docs have I found mention that this is an appropriate action. Am I missing something?

Jack
