Oracle finally got back to me and said I should be all right. They suggested just running root.sh and continuing with the remainder of the install steps.

They're looking at the errors in the log file for me now.

root.sh will update your oratab file. this is needed by many of the oracle tools. actually the root user can edit the file thru vi and update it/add the details to it.

also it initializes some other directories - one of which could be your orainventory directory (i am making a guess here. pl correct me if i am worng)
