Hum, anonymous works best when you do not send the email to the whole group. I will try hard not to look at the name though;-)

Joe,

We (I and few want to be anonymous) are trying to build a tool like Data Unloader which converts the data file from one Operating System to another Operating System format.. (i.e. it will convert Oracle datafile from NT to any Unix and vice versa).. If this works well you don't need to export/import the databases to do a cross platform migration. You can run the converter and transfer the datafiles to the target operating system and recreate the control file to bring up the database. Since we know the data block formats and how oracle stores the data inside data blocks we may come up with a tool, which reads the oracle datafiles and gives you an ASCII text datafile. Something similar to Data Unloader. Jeremiah (of Amazon.com) has an enhancement request with oracle for similar tool and not sure about the oracle's stand on that. He may have more details to share.. :)

This tool will be superior to DUL (not sure about Oracle's ***official ** support status of the databases created using this converter) and will try to address the current limitations of DUL.

Best Regards,

Well yours truly is doing a 3 hr backup/reocvery presetation on a geek cruise in may(2002). Those of you who've had backup/recovery problems(more like recovery problems), if you'd like to share some of the scenarios/problems you've run into, the more bizarre the better, corrupted redo logs, etc. If you'd kindly email them to me, i'll include then in the lesson(and will send you a copy of the slides when completed).

Also, there is at least one person(the goddess) who has dealt with oracle support on this, my question is(as my inquiring mind would like to know), has anyone attempted to write the tool to so that(the unloader thing), reading the raw data blocks from a data file and dump out the data in simple insert statements.

IF no one has, is anyone interested in trying it out?

joe
